Blog Safety3
As an instructor answered questions when she taught us how to set up blogs yesterday, she and a student had a discussion about putting one’s name on a blog. The whole question of blog safety for young students came up. The student later sent me an article from the PBS teachers website about blog safety. I could not open it on my computer, but I am interested in seeing what the discussion was. Could someone send me the URL? Perhaps this would make a good topic for discussion?
I did not think it was much of an issue, but now I notice that I am hesitant to post my own name or anyone else’s. Hmmm……
I think that what is “NOT safe” for students is not always unsafe for adults. Those of us who are members of public boards, working for public institutions or dealing with the public in any way are already “out there” as much as if we put our names on a professional blog.
I see the potential of using blogs professionally to force me to reflect. However, I still question using them as a teaching tool with elementary students. The safety issue is addressed at blogsafety.com for teens and parents but there is very little I’ve found on blog safety for younger kids. I plan to continue studying the elementary blogs and create a “framework” for how to introduce them and address the safety issues.
Take a look at this site for some additional information about using blogs as an educational tool: http://www.toblogor.blogspot.com/
